Market Recap

XAUUSD
Between 01:00 and 23:56 server time, XAUUSD traded a 64.15-point session, opening at 3977.66, posting a low at 3959.67 at 16:01 and a high at 4023.82 at 19:24, before closing at 4018.26. That left the day up 40.6 points, or 1.02%, with the range equating to 1.61% of the open and 65.9% of the prevailing daily ATR. Price made and hit fresh 5‑day and 10‑day lows during the session, with the trough printed at 3959.67, then progressed to the top of the day’s range into the evening fix, finishing 5.6 points below the high and 58.6 above the low. Round-number levels were active: the downswing reached into the 3950 handle, and subsequent trade moved through 4000 to set the 4023.82 high; the tape crossed at least one 10‑handle boundary over the course of the day. On higher timeframes, the close remained beneath the H4 50‑period SMA at 4057.13, and spot stayed below the daily upper Bollinger Band at 4201.42. The intraday sequence featured a lower print first and a later high, with no new extremes after 19:24, leaving the settlement in the upper end of the distribution. Relative to recent reference points, the session both registered and set the 5‑day and 10‑day lows but concluded materially above those levels by the close. Overall, the market ended with gains on the day and a close near the session high within a range that remained contained versus the current daily ATR.

GBPUSD
GBPUSD ended the 17 Jul session at 1.35, down 0.00214 or 0.16% from the open, after a 0.00545 range that spanned about 0.4% of the opening level. The pair opened at 1.35 and set the intraday high of 1.35 at 10:01 server time before sliding to the session low of 1.34 at 13:52. It then retraced into the close, finishing slightly above the midpoint of the day’s range. The sequence placed the high in the late morning and the low in the early afternoon, with the close situated between them rather than at an extreme. No 100‑pip handle was registered at the session low, and the closing level was not the nearest round 100‑pip mark. On higher timeframes, price action remained capped beneath the daily upper Bollinger band at 1.35382 and below the recent 10‑day high at 1.35573, while holding above the daily middle Bollinger band at 1.33315. The session thus unfolded within established daily bands, with intraday movement contained below the cited resistance markers and without proximity to the multi‑day peak. By the close, the market had retraced a portion of the early‑afternoon weakness but did not reclaim the morning high, leaving a modest net decline on the day and a settlement near mid‑range. Times referenced are server time.

Economic Calendar Recap & Preview

Euro area inflation prints set the tone over the past day: headline CPI slowed to 2.8 percent year over year, below both the 3.0 percent prior and the 3.0 percent forecast, while CPI month over month fell 0.1 percent, reversing the 3.2 percent increase previously and undershooting the 3.2 percent consensus. Core CPI year over year held at 2.4 percent, exactly matching the prior and forecast, and the core CPI index edged down to 102.87 from 102.9. The next 24 hours are quiet, with no scheduled economic releases or central bank decisions on the server-time calendar; no major speeches are listed either, leaving the docket empty.
